Hand Luggage size restrictions..

I'mm going to be travelling to south africa. I will be going from heathrow to frankfurt and then a connecting flight to south africa.

Now the flight to frankfurt will be with Lufthansaa and the flight from frankfurt to cape town with south african airways. Now they both have ever so slightly different bag restrictions..

Lufthansaa allows 55 x 40 x 20 cm

SAA allows 56 cm, width of 45 cm and depth of 25 cm

Now my hand luggage case measurements (when full) slight more depth, 1cm extra, so 26cm.

1cm over on the depth for Saa and 5cm over for the Lufthansa restrictions...

Basically my question is... How likely am I to be stopped and told its too big ? I definitely cant be told that I will have to check it in because it will have all my expensive electronics in it.

  1. its unlikely that they will ask to check it, unless it looks huge then they might question it but by the sounds of it, it isn't so you should be fine. I travel by plane 5 times a year and my hand luggage has never been checked for its size.

  2. In my experience they are sometimes quite fussy about that so I think if might be quite likely that you will be stopped and told it is too big.  Check to see if either of those airlines have a Skycheck service and if you are willing to do that, it might take care of it.  Otherwise I would buy a new carry on bag that you know will meet the restrictions.
