Question:

Hand brake warning light

My handbrake warning light (the ! symbol to show its on) comes on when i go round sharp corners, even though my handbrake is fully down/off. It started doing this about a month ago, its a 2 year old car.

Ive been told this could be because its sensitive, how do i de-sensitise it, can i do it myself or does it have to go into a garage and if so would it be covered unde the warrenty?

Thankyou

  1. The "Handbrake" light covers all sorts of things to do with the brakes. Might be a badly fitted switch on the lever, low brake fluid level, or quite possibly the brake pad wear warning.

As it's brakes I would have a garage look at it

  2. Try this, chock your wheels front and rear..Sit in your car, turn the ignition on(dash lights on NO engine running)release the handbrake(warning light out)wiggle the handbrake lever if light on dash stays off the light might be a h/brake and brake fluid warning.Re-apply h/brake and check fluid level...

DONT FORGET TO REMOVE THE WHEEL CHOCKS..

  3. check your brake fluid level. Some vehicles also use that light for fluid level. so when you go around a corner the fluid shifts and the sensor sees a low fluid signal. It should also come on if you accelerate fast.

  4. Lose electrical connection, maybe the main reason. If it happens around sharp corners it might double as traction control warning light.
