Question:

Hand knitted afghans and baby clothing?

A friend of mine has rented a spot at a local fair (a week long)and has offered to try and sell my items for me along with her own. How much should I sell them for. I have many afghans, baby blankets, booties, etc that I have made over the years but do not know what I should sell them for. I am not looking to make a huge profit, I just do not know what other people are charging. Any general info would be helpful.

  1. Rule of  thumb is  to  figure your  cost of  supply,  time envolved,  Set  a  price  per  hour you think your  worth,  add this  and  double,  some  even  triple it.  Example;

                4 skiens= 8.00   (I dont  know $ what it would  be)

                plus  2hours @ 7.00= 14.00

                     x2   = 44.00

  2. Well for my business to start I take the materials cost Double them and that is my whole sale which is half what a store sells for retail at a craft fair i would go Retail minus 25% a real deal. your going to have to set a price point you feel comfortable with then it goes up and down from there as to what people will pay I use to make scarves at Christmas time but the costs plus my mark up plus the stores mark up made them too expensive to retail and I can only sell them at craft shows. Good luck.  Also I usually sell one really cheap item that costs me a couple of bucks to make and I will only make a couple of bucks on as a loss leader to get people interested in your stuff.

  3. I have read in many crafting articles 7 times the cost of your materials seems to work for knitted items.  As a fellow knitter who has tried to sell at fairs, I know that if I try to recoup cost for labor I will outprice myself at most venues.

    I would love to make a living handknitting garments but even if I charged minimum wage for my labor an afghan or baby blanket could cost into the hundreds of dollars in labor only, which may only sell in some high priced store in Beverly Hills.  I am currently working on a very fine lace baby blanket that will take more than 100 hours to complete.  I don't know many people willing to spend $500 on a blanket that will be outgrown in a few months.
