let me preface this by saying that i don't believe much in the usefulness of poker books unless you are fairly new to poker, but when i found out that one of my personal favorite players, gus hansen, was releasing a book, i had to read it...and i must say, it is a genius way of approaching poker literature, showing every hand played, and some not played, for the consumption of the reader as he/she follows gus over the course of his win in the 2007 aussie millions...i highly recommend it, and as a result starting today i will be selecting a series of hands for this question from gus' book(i already have used one hand, which i obtained from a sample of the book i read online before buying it myself)

...the hand will be posted in add details

  1. All in!!  Gus is a maniac. Thats how I would play it.

  2. I love the idea of the book. I got an E-Mail from Full Tilt (hate the site and never play there anymore) about it and it sounds awesome. I also like how Gus talks in his recorder all the time. He is one of the top pros, (and most under rated in my opinion) for a reason. He is always studying and learning.

As for this hand, I think I would fold. Gus is smart. He's probably not going to go all in without the flush as well or a top hand. This is a very tough fold. Theres only a few hands that beat us. But it's a tourny so we can't rebuy on a tough break hand like a cash game. There's still 1 other person in the hand to so you can't rule out them calling if they had the Ace of Diamonds. Very tough fold.

Gus used to play very loose and people give him alot of smack for it. But he has tightened up alot and still gets perseved as a loose player.

I would put him on a boat and he's hoping we hit the flush and call his all in. So pocket 8's or 3's, I'm guessing 8's.

  3. Wow, I just had a bad vibe ...

Gus won the Aussie, right?  And he's all-in right now.  So I have a baaaaaaaad feeling that he's not bluffing.  Also, BB can't possibly have a monster, because if he does, he'll call Gus, and we'd be reading about how BB won the Aussie ....

    This changes everything ....

Preflop: Standard raise, call, call, no real info.

Postflop: Gus bets more than 1/2 pot, we call, BB check raises!  On a slop-flop!  Is he squeezing?  Is he monster?  Is he bullying?

Post-turn: A dangerous card hits, and BB checks.  ???  Why?  Is he going to try the check/raise AGAIN?   That's not a profitable play.  Is he running away?  Odd, given that he took a shot.  Maybe he's cutting his losses with an overpair, but wouldn't an overpair have reraised preflop?

Post-turn: Gus goes all-in.  Ugh.  Waaaay too aggressive for a boat, even a baby boat. Or is it?  A bet would need to be 3000+, and he only has 3x that.  If he checks, we're likely to check....

I have to believe we're the best hand right now.  Gus may have a lesser flush or a set (or less), BB perhaps an overpair or top pair, or even an Ace+face.

I'd call the all-in and hope BB folds.  If he reraises or bets post-river, I'll have to fold and save my last 8K.

Of course, I know (post-Aussie) that I'm wrong, but that shouldn't be an issue.  Wrong is some of my best work.

  4. i think the q high flush is beat, I would fold.

  5. I wouldn't be surprised if Gus has pocket sixes.  It's unlikely that he would bet preflop with just a six kicker and even more unlikely that he did so with 8/6 or 6/3.  There's not enough chips at this point in the pot to risk your tournament on a bluff or a draw, so he either has pocket sixes or high flush.  Plus, both you and the BB bet like chasing a flush was a high probability and the bet would have a high probability of a call. Either way, you fold and let the big stack try to take it down.
