Hand painted dora or other character?

I'm wondering how people get away with making their own interpretation of a character for resell. Does it come under the copy write laws? I have hand painted a few characters and would like to sell them on eBay or on my own website. Would i get in to trouble for that? It seems there are a lot of hand made and hand painted things of characters being sold but i am petrified of getting sued. And how do i respond to an answer given here please? Thanks in advance

Look up the rules on the company site that owns the character, usually its in there somewhere. Or maybe you can email them and ask. Better play it safe than sorry!
