Hand-washing fleece from two guinea pigs?

Is it possible to hand-wash fleece from a 5x3 C&C cage with two guinea pigs? My mom doesn't want me washing in the washer, and she doesn't even want to try it at all. I also want to know how long it would take me to do it. I really want fleece so I don't have to keep paying for bedding and make my guinea pigs a lot happier. Please tell me how to hand-wash fleece! Thanks!

  1. Never had guinea pigs, but I use fleece for cage liners and hammocks in my rat cage. Really what you do, is was it like anything else. Shake off all the food and p**p etc, then fill the laundry sink with water and soap and wash. Doesn't take all that long, just make sure to rinse it out afterwards :)

  2. Eeek, that sounds like a nasty job! You will have to wash it a lot, and you will probably need two, so you will have one while the other is drying. Fleece is also not very absorbent, and will not control odors in the cage. I get a giant bag of aspen or pine bedding from Petco for my animals, and it costs about 10 bucks and lasts for a looong time. (And I have 4 chinchilla cages!) I don't like carefresh b/c it is very expensive, and smells funny to me. But, if you insist on fleece, I would try washing it with a small amount of antibacterial dish soap, or a bit of fragrance free laundry detergent. But with fleece, you will have to wash it almost daily, I would imagine, and they will probably end up going under the fleece to hide too. Good luck :)

That site has a good detail process for washing fleece, by hand or machine.
