the federal law says u must be 21 years old to buy a handgun from a FFL licensed dealer. HOWEVER, it does not say that you cant buy one in a PRIVATE transacation. so does that mean if im under 21, i can buy a handgun from a PRIVATE citizen who is not a licensed dealer, provided that my state law does not restrict handgun purchases? like at a gun show?

  1. At least in Massachusetts if you have a FID which is only for non large capacity rifles and shotguns you can go to the police station and you can get a permit to purchase a handgun. So you can buy a handgun from a dealer and transport it home and keep at your house for protection. So yes at least in ma you can buy a handgun under 21 but only from a dealer.

  2. Yes. That being said, you cannot buy the ammunition for a handgun until you are 21 though as well.

  3. No.  You must be 21 to purchase a handgun, and have no felonies or domestic violence on your record.  If you violate those, you are liable for federal charges.  At a gun show or private dealer, they are not required, as of now, to check your background, but they must verify age and state of residence.
