Question:

Handheld GPS - Garmin?

I am looking to buy my dad a Garmin for Father's Day next week. We do alot of boating on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky, which is full of coves and turns and twists which all look alike so a handheld device will be perfect. He mentioned wanting a handheld Garmin. Again, we will be using this on the boat mainly. Any recommendations are well appreciated. Thank you.

  1. If price weren't really a big issue..and I wanted a good handheld Marine GPS...the Garmin C60Cx looks like a really nice unit. The C60CSx is the same unit, but adds an elecronic compass and barometric altimeter..they've got a really good sensitive GPS reciever and are, at least, water resistant.

If the C60's are out of your price range..then all I can say is Garmin makes some really good units..and if you're looking on Amazon..when they say "non-mapping", they generally mean that the unit doesn't auto-navigate...but they generally will display your position on a map. Garmin makes some good units..and you could probably find a basic color GPS unit that would do exactly what you want..just try to get one that's at least water resistant.

  2. I use the Garmin Legend Cx. 2 AA batteries that seem to last forever, or you can power it on through the usb cable, and it's water resistant. no touch screen but easy enough to use. There is a slightly better model called the HCx. Supposedly it has a better antenna design and the US street map included. Overall, I am satisfied with my model. It doesn't speak, and it won't find your olive gardens or mcdonalds for you, but the features are enough for my needs. It will also record your path travelled and you can reverse the course so you can travel back the way you came (hansel and grettle with the bread crumb trail).  I paid $135 for it last year from Bass Pro Shop

  3. That will be a nice gift..You can have a look at Garmin StreetPilot c340 Mobile GPS , a decent deal for it is only $145 instead of $500.

Or Garmin Nuvi 200 GPS , it is $200 at frys.com.

If you plan to buy at Eastbuy.com, the coupon: $50 off on Select Garmin GPS Receivers..will save you some money.
