Question:

Handicap Parking Regulations?

Hello,

I live on a somewhat crowded street that has an almost overwhelming amount of handicap parking spaces. Up and down both sides of the road I can count probably eight different spots, each belonging to a separate house.

Now, I have a neighbor that lives across the street, an older couple, who has two Handicap Parking spaces in front of their house. Everyday this man will park his car(s) in these spots, but only during the day. When it starts to get darker out he will actually move them to his rear driveway, leaving two readily available spots open.

While I fully understand the need for these spaces, when does it become unlawful? I know for a fact that they only park there during the day to keep other neighbors away (I see it all the time). After doing a little searching, I found that you need to provide adequate reason why your driveway isn't accessible enough to get a Handicap spot in the first place. But what if both residents of a house own a spot, AND still use the driveway?

  1. You would have to deal with the local parking authority, but 2 handicap spots for one home sounds excessive in any case.

  2. Here is a great site to learn more and report any abuse that you see regarding handicapped parking. I am not sure on all the laws so I am sorry I can't help more. I have a neighbor who uses the only spot we have without proper plates or placard and I have reported her several times (she doesn't seem to care) The site says that they report to the police at the end of the month.
