Question:

Handrearing budgie chick, advice needed?

I have an avairy with budgies that are nesting and I have found the youngest of a clutch is suffering. It it a lot younger than the other two chicks and was face down in the concave and looked dead.

After closer inspection the nasal area was closed with muck and the chick was quite cold, I have removed it because it was being trodden into the floor by the older and more active brothers/sisters and have placed the warmth of a heatlamp onto him.

Would anyone please tell me what steps I need to follow to keep this little fella alive? He had no pinfeathers just yet and his eyes are beginning to open. Since the warmth has been on him he is moving his leg and wing slightly which is better than before. His crop has some food inside of it, but this I know will not last too long.

Any suggestions welcome.

  1. Go to the pet store and buy a container of KAYTEE HAND FEEDING FORMULA and feed it with a syringe according to the directions on the container. And never microwave your baby food or use old food either. always make it fresh each feeding. You can can also search down some stuff called INSTANT OUNCES for baby birds that young you mix with the formula.

  2. Yep, we're having the same problem. Keep it warm and get some chick feed. Its like little grains and just give it water. That's all you can do really...other than go to a vet. And if it dies, don't feel too bad as 1/4 hand reared birds die to begin with. Good luck!
