Question:

Hands ahead of clubface? High or low ball?

Ive been taught that hands ahead of clubface at address delofts the club. I can attest to this when I hit a low shot or punch.

If on a high iron shot, the hands have to come ahead of clubface, why doesnt it deloft the club?

Is it just because of the full swing compared to the low finish of a punch?

  1. ok this is an insanely complicated question. but ur excellent word choice will do. well the high irons are just built to hit it more vertical and harder to tweak. but i think its the full swing. i wouldnt think about the hands in front of the face, i just kind of put it in the swing.

  2. They are not going to be as ahead as on a low shot. The hands are going to be more even with the club-head on a high shot . For a low shot the ball is positioned further back in the stance which should help keep the hands further ahead through impact. Try hitting some balls on a severe up-slope to get the correct feeling. You will need to play the ball forwards

and tilt shoulders so they are parallel with the slope. If your hands are too far ahead you will strike hard into the slope.

  3. It has to do with the way a higher lofted club is engineered and the legnth of the club shaft. To square the blade of a higher lofted club, you have to have your hands more in front of the ball. This is designed into the club because you need to hit down more on the shorter irons to get more spin on the ball which also causes ball to go higher, straighter and hold green better. Since this is engineered into higher clubs, your not really moving your hands more forward and delofting the club by simply squaring the clubface. You need to hit a less descending blow on lower clubs like 2 and 3 irons or you'll trap the ball agains the ground and bounce it or dribble it.  This also means your hands can't be way in front of the ball.

To deloft a club you first need to turn the toe counter clockwise, say from about 12 :00 to 11:00 then grip the club normally. Move your hands far enough forward, (actually this should be done by putting ball farther back in stance and you'll also have to grip down a little),  when addressing the ball so that the club face is now back to 12:00 and square to the ball. You can't simply move your hands forward at address after gripping the club and squaring the clubface. Your club face will no longer be square and will be aiming way to the right if you do.

  4. Flatstick is right.  Also you are talking about hands in front at address--this delofts the club at address but only delofts the club at impact if you get back to this position at contact.

  8. The hands are ahead on all shots because of the flex in the shaft the clubhead lags behind a little.  It is the type of swing and follow through that allows you to keep a punch or "knock down" shot lower.
