Question:

Handycam video clip takes up too much space on PC?

Hi,

I just shot on my handycam and transferred it to my PC. But even a small video clip is taking up too much space. A 1 minute footage is about 1-2 GB in size. I wanted to copy the footage in a CD. I heard there is a software which will reduce the size / convert clip into another format.

What software can be used? Please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

KS.

  1. When capturing video for editing it will to take up a lot of space.  A 1 hr minidv tape requires 11-13gb of space when captured to the computer (in both SD and HDV)

Use windows movie maker and save (export) the movie or clip to .wmv .  This format offers the smallest files with the least amount of quality loss in most cases

  2. As MotionPicture said, MiniDV takes up about 13 GByte / hour.  If you've got 1 min taking up 1-2 GByte that's more than 60 GByte / hour - it sounds like you've got uncompressed DV!  Check your capture app and see if there's an option for which codec is used.

You can put your footage on a CD as either a VCD or SVCD, or you can create a DVD, but you should start by editing your video to get rid of the unwanted bits (maybe a bit pointless if you've only got 1 minute of video!).  You can create a VCD or SVCD by converting the finished video with Super and burning the disk with Ashampoo-Burning-Studio-Free, or you can burn a DVD with DVD Flick.
