Hanescu/ Moser upset Cermak/ Polasek in opening round – Bet-At-Home Cup 2011
The top seeds, Czech Frantisek Cermak and Slovak Filip Polasek, crashed out to the Romanian German tandem of Victor Hanescu and Frank Moser at the opening round of the Bet-at-home Cup 2011. They suffered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat over
the unseeded pair, who automatically advanced into the quarter-finals of this clay court tournament on Wednesday.
The highest ranked doubles team of the Austrian Open, Cermak and Polasek, displayed dismal performance in their opening round match and were eventually ousted from the Tennis stadium Kitzbuhel in sixty-one minutes by the hands
of Hanescu and Moser.
The winning combination of Hanescu and Moser quickly made on track after taking full advantage of the several unforced errors and four double faults the seeds committed. Despite losing their serve once, the unseeded duo broke Cermak
and Polasek’s serve thrice to register an assuring 6-2 score line. They further spiced the set by producing a much better first serve share of 74 percent as compared to their opponents’ 65 percent and registered an impressive 65 percent win on it.
Cermak and Polasek carried their losing ways in the final set. Despite earning an early desiderated break in the second game, they squandered their lead by gifting away their serve in the very next game. Later, the experienced
team lost their serve again in the eighth game to eventually exit from the opening round of this event. They committed more double faults and clobbered a slightly lower first serve share of 54 percent as opposed to their opponents’ 59 percent. Above this,
the Czech Slovak duo earned only 54 percent win on it and fended off only six out of eleven breakpoints conceded.
Ranked 16th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour doubles rankings; Cermak and Polasek had a brilliant season so far. They clinched two titles already and had a 15 – 4 win – loss record. However, in this event,
they spilled several unforced errors and six double faults. Above all, they had a drastic co-ordination among themselves.
Hanescu and Moser on the other hand will advance to face Colombian Spanish tandem of Santiago Giraldo and Pere Riba.
Giraldo and Riba earned a straight set victory against German duo of Dustin Brown and Michael Kohlmann. They saved both breakpoints faced and capitalised on half of the four breakpoint chances to their advantage to seal the match
with a 6-4, 6-4 score line in just under an hour on Monday.
