Hanescu/Wassen dismiss Andujar/Gimeno-Traver in the first round – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
Romanian/Dutch team of Victor Hanescu and Rogier Wassen came back from one set down to battle past Pablo Andujar and Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 in the first round at the Credit Agricole Suisse Open
in Gstaad on Tuesday. The match lasted for an hour and 28 minutes.
Hanescu and Wassen took an early lead as they broke the Spaniards in the first game of the opening set and held their serve in the next game to take a 2-0 lead. Andujar and Gimeno-Traver broke back in the fourth game and levelled
the score at 2-2. The Spaniard team broke again in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead but they failed to hold their serve in the next game and lost the tenth game as well to square off the score at 5-5. Andujar and Gimeno-Traver claimed the decisive break
in the twelfth game to grab the set 7-5.
The Spaniard duo delivered 63 percent of the first serves and won the same of percentage of points on them in the first set. Andujar and Gimeno-Traver made the difference with their aggressive returns, claiming nine of the twenty
first return points in the opening set. The 30th ranked team saved one of the three break points he faced on his own serve and converted all the three break points they received on the Romanian/Dutch pair’s serve in the first set.
In the second set, Hanescu and Wassen broke the Spaniard in the third game and consolidated on it to build a 3-1 lead. The Romanian/Dutch duo capitalised on the single break of serve to win the set 6-4.
Hanescu and Wassen kept their first serve percentage at 57 percent and grabbed 59 percent of the first serves into points in the second set. The Romanian and Dutch combination converted a whopping 77 percent of the second serves
into points. In comparison, Andujar and Gimeno-Traver delivered 61 percent of the first serves and one ace in the second set. The Spaniards failed to save one of the four break points they faced and could not capitalise on any of the three break point opportunities
they created on Hanescu and Wassen’s serve in the second set.
The Romanian/Dutch pair claimed a mini-break on the very first point in the match tie-break and consolidated on it to win 10-7.
Hanescu and Wassen will take on another Spaniard pair of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Marc Lopez in the quarterfinals.
