Hanescu/Wassen prevail over Garcia-Lopez/Lopez in the quarterfinals – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
Victor Hanescu of Romania and Rogier Wassen of the Netherlands knocked out Spaniards Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Marc Lopez in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 in the quarterfinals at the Credit Agricole Suisse Open in Gstaad on Thursday.
The Romanian/Dutch pair took one hour and nineteen minutes to oust their opponents.
Hanescu/Wassen and the Spaniard team held their serve in the first ten games of the opening set, equalising the score at 5-5 to force a tie-break. The Romanian/Dutch duo broke Gacria-Lopez and Lopez in the eleventh game and held
their serve in the next game to win the set 7-5.
Hanescu and Wassen delivered 63 percent of the first serves and one ace in the opening set. The Romanian/Dutch combination converted 84 percent of the first serves and 73 percent of the second serves into points. While, Garcia-Lopez
and Lopez kept their first serve percentage at 71 percent and hit a single ace in the first set. The Spaniards bagged 82 percent of the first service points and 44 percent of the second service points. Both teams had almost same return performance. Hanescu
and Wassen had a slightly higher first return conversion rate as they won eighteen percent of the points on the first returns compared to sixteen percent by their opponents. The Romanian/Dutch pair did not face any break point on their own serve and capitalised
on one of the two break point opportunities they created on the Spanish pair’s serve in the first set.
In the second set, the Romanian/Dutch team took an early lead, breaking Garcia-Lopez and Lopez in the opening game and clinching their next service game to go ahead 2-0. The Spaniards bounced back as they broke Hanescu and Wassen
in the sixth game to square off the score at 3-3. The Romanian/Dutch combination and Garcia-Lopez/Lopez held their serve in the next four games, squaring off the score at 5-5. Hanescu and Wassen drew the final blood, breaking the Spaniards in the eleventh
game and consolidating on it to seal the set 7-5.
The Romanian/Dutch duo kept their first serve percentage at 69 percent and smacked a single ace, hitting a couple of double faults in the second set. Hanescu and Wassen lost most of the points on the second serve, claiming just
four of the twelve second service points. However, they did well to win 39 percent of the first return points in the second set.
Hanescu and Wassen will take on Santiago Giraldo and Joao Souza or Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek in the semi-finals.
