The Kutch Region:

From Ahmedabad there are plenty of options to spend ones weekends leisurely. For instance, the Kutch region which happens to be the largest district of Gujarat beckons one and all by its unique charms. Anthropologically the Kutch area is very important and as many as 18 colorful tribal communities can be found in this part of the world.

Holidays in Kutch is not only about nomadic tribes. You will find that the costumes they wear are other-worldly. The jewellery is ethnic and their homes are vibrant with colors.

Royal Vadodra:

For a brush with royalty, Vadodara is the place to go. It's a charming city replete with grand palaces, verdant parks, temples and museums. Many regard Vadodra as the melting pot of Gujarati culture. In the days of yore, Vadodra used to be the bastion of the Gaekwad royal family who ruled over the kingdom of Baroda. The city originates from the banks of Vishwamitri river. Apart from its regal grandeur, Vadodra is also an industrial hub of Gujarat.

If archaeological proofs are any indicators, traces of human habitation have been found here that dates back to the prehistoric times. Vadodara has a long and chequered history and it came under successive spell of the Guptas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakubas, Solankis, the Sultans of Delhi, the Mughals and ultimately to the Marathas. Vadodra owes much of its greatness to Maharaja Sayajirao who was a great patron of art and culture.

Spiritual Tryst, Somnath:

For the spiritual seekers, nothing can be more appropriate then a weekend visit to the world famous Someshwar Mahadev temple or Somnath Temple as it is popularly referred to. This temple is among the finest in India. Although the temple is as old as the origin of the universe, the present temple was constructed in 1950. It is one of the "Jyotirlingas" in India which is immensely venerated by the Hindus.

The temple is conspicuous by its shikhar, the sanctum sanctorum and the Sabha Mandap or the Assembly Hall. The Nritya Mandap or the Dancing Hall was built much later. The temple draws inspiration from the Solanki school of architecture.

The temple rises to an awesome height of 155 feet. The kalash on top weighs 10 tonnes. There is also a flag- mast which is 37 feet long. These particulars provide one with an idea to the immensity of the temple. History suggests that this temple was destroyed by marauding Muslim invaders a number of times, but each time it rose from the ashes of destruction like a phoenix.

One of the peculiarities of the temple as far as the location is concerned is that there is absolutely no land whatsoever from the temple to the South Pole. There is an arrow which indicates the route.

In the Mane Land - Gir Forest:

A weekend in the company of Lions? Sounds great, right! Well, The Gir Forest which is the last remaining bastion of the Asiatic Lions is the perfect place to chill out during the weekends. The Gir Forest is well spread out on a 1424 sq. Kms., area. The dry deciduous forest harbors some of the most amazing flora and fauna. Apart from Lions, there are thirty species of mammals, twenty species of reptiles and numerous avian species The Gir forest has the distinction of being the only forest outside of Africa, where the lion still prowls.

In the days of yore, the Gir Forest used to be the hunting ground of the Nawab of Junagadh and by the early 1900s the number of Lions found declined dramatically and it took a person of the stature of Lord Curzon to advise the Nawab not to kill but protect the Lions.

Although Gir Forest is associated with Lions, very few visitors to Gujarat are even aware that the Gir Forest is also a paradise for bird watching with more than a 100 avian species dwelling in the forest. So the next time you come to Gir Forest, come well equipped with your binoculars and you can have a date with birds like Pygmy Woodpecker, Hard Headed Oriole, Ratanghuna, Crested Hawk Eagle, Owl, paradise flycatcher, King Vulture, Jungle Quail, Adholia, Brown Fish, Valadera, Pilipat crested serpent eagle etc.. In fact the list of avian species is endless.

Another place worth visiting at Gir Forest is the Crocodile Farm, where young crocodiles are scientifically breed and nurtured.

Cool as a Cucumber - Saputara:

For many, weekends are best spent in a hill station and if that is what you have in mind, than look no further and go headlong to Saputara. Perched majestically on the imposing Sahyadri hills, surrounded by lush green forests and colonized by ancient tribes, Saputara is indeed very charming replete with lakes, streams, woodlands and undulating hills.

At the center point of Saputara there is a shimmering lake and a stint of boating on the sparkling waters of the lake can be an enchanting experience. There is a road that meanders across up to the Chimney ropeway and from their one can bask in the breathtaking views of the undulating hills. The climate is salubrious year round which means one can travel to Saputara any time of the year. There are numerous trekking routes in and around Saputara and for the avid trekkers Saputara can be like a breath of fresh air.

Of Silver Sands & Balmy Beaches:

Gujarat has a coastline which is all of 1600 Kms.and is easily the longest in India. The Gujarat coast boasts of some truly pristine and virgin stretches of beach. Be it Ahmedpur-Mandvi, Kutch-Mandvi, Chorwad or Diu, the opportunities to indulge in sun and surf are endless. The Gujarat coast is a historical treasure trove with impregnable Portugese forts, shore temples, port cities and luxurious beach palaces that still beckons beach aficionados from far and near.

Across the picturesque Ahmedpur Mandvi lies the spectacular island of Diu, a perfect blend of sun and surf. Diu is located at a distance of125 kms. from Junagadh and happens to be one of finest beach destination. The island is conspicuous by its graceful Portuguese churches one which has houses a museum where some of the rarest Portuguese artifacts are showcased. The other enduring landmark of Diu is the Fort - imposing and impregnable would be the right words to describe the fort.

The island of Diu is still very isolated which means the island is virgin which is a rarity these days as far as beach resorts are concerned. This stunning island in the Arabian Sea has the river Chasi meandering through its northern borders, thereby adding to the beauty of the place many times over.

Diu was an important Portuguese commune and undoubtedly among the most exotic beach destinations of India. The pace of life is unhurried to the point of being lazy.

Diu aside, there is another beach that is even more secluded than Diu. Chorwad, which was discovered by the erstwhile Nawab of Junagadh and developed it into a resort by building a magnificent sea side palace in the year 1928. Ever since than, this beach has been popular with the most discerning of beach aficionados. One huge advantage of holidaying in Chorwad Beach is that it is miles away from embracing mass tourism and not more than 50 guests visits this beach every day which is great news for people seeking discreet privacy.

If you only want to travel 50 km then you will not be able to go to any scenic spot. You could visit neighboring cities of Anand or Nadiyad. I would suggest that a nice place to visit would be Gandhinagar, which is right outside of A'bad. There are many government sights to see there. there is also large Hindu temple, called Akshardham, there with several multimedia presentations, robotic shows, nice canteen and rides for fun. You can easily spend a day there. Thats what I would do.
