Hank Steinbrenner wants Cliff Lee to be part of the glory
Cliff Lee is a living mystery, this season. The free agent, who was part of the Texas Rangers squad that made it to the 2010 World Series, has been the talk of the year. For many ball clubs, the player presents an exceptional chance to excel in the coming
season which is expected to start in April, next year. The New York Yankees have been tailing the agent around the city for a very long period of time and while they’re the favorite team to come through with a deal, many clubs are out in pursuit.
The Boston Red Sox are one of the surprise packages of the year and it is believed that they presented the ace pitcher with a 7 year contract offer. The Texas Rangers are the other club to be wildly linked with the star agent. His family currently resides
in Arkansas, Texas and it may be a possibility that Lee agrees to stay put. The one thing that any player in the free agency would be worried about is the number of years he would be allowed to play with a particular club. And that is one thing the Yankees
are ready to accept, in Lee’s case.
Hank Steinbrenner recently came out to express his view on the situation. He said he expects to see Lee join the Yanks and function like Andy Pettitte. The players, he claimed, were similar and could work beyond the age of 39.
"Looking at how well Andy pitched up until this year and so forth, and he's a lefty, the same kind of pitcher as Andy, I don't really see a problem," Hank Steinbrenner said. "I think Cliff's the kind of guy that can get it done and be effective for a long
time. He's a great pitcher."
Phil Hughes is one of the young players coming up in the Yankees’ pitching rotation and grouped with other youngsters, Lee could find a challenge in the team.
"Most of the season last season, he was fantastic - he just got tired out at the end," Hank Steinbrenner talked of Hughes. "In the second full season as a starter, he's going to be that much better. We've got some good young pitchers coming, too. Everybody
thinks Nova is the real deal. And with the pitching we're going to have and the bullpen, and with the hitting we're going to have, as we always do, I would hope that Cliff would want to join the party."
