Hanley Ramirez’s hit helps Florida Marlins defeat Cincinnati Reds 9-5 – MLB Update
Hanley Ramirez emerged as the solo star to lead Florida Marlins to a 9-5 victory against Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati on Sunday, May 1.
However, there was a major setback that rudely struck the starting pitcher of the Reds’ Bronson Arroyo as well. In the seven innings that he pitched, he gave up seven hits that gave the rival team three runs as well. "It was really disappointing when they
get the lead and you tie it, then you give them the lead again," Arroyo said. "The ball is really carrying well here now."
Sunday night’s game commenced with the two-run homer by Ramirez who saw an opportunity in the struggling Arroyo. The first inning remained eventful as the Reds did not take much time to level the score. Cincinnati’s Jay Bruce got a two-run homer when Ricky
Nolasco came out to pitch for the Marlins.
The third inning saw Florida take up the lead to 3-2, as Greg Dobbs did his part. Arroyo who was clearly not in good form was charged by Dobbs to right as he got the third run for the Marlins. Nolasco then kept the Reds’ batters away from the runs.
After three scoreless innings, the Reds levelled the score with Brandon Phillips’ single in the sixth inning. Florida came back in the game by taking the lead to 5-3 with John Buck’s two-run homer.
The biggest surprise that awaited the Reds came in the eighth inning. First, it was Mike Stanton who homered to centre to make it 7-3, then came Emilio Bonifacio who scored another two runs, taking the score up to 9-3.
Ramirez’s first season home-run not only gave a good start to his team, but eventually led to the win for the Marlins. "It feels good to get the first one, but I really want my timing back," said Ramirez, whose April was next to disastrous owing to the inconsistent
performance.
The team manager, however, struck a cautious note. "I'm not concerned about his numbers," Edwin Rodriguez said. "I am more concerned with how he is handling the slump. I know the numbers will be there. So far, he's handled it well."
By the time the Reds tried to stage a come-back in the game, it was clearly too late. Chris Heisey tried to hit hard, but could only manage to double to deep centre that gave the Reds two runs and could hardly stop the Marlins from winning 9-5.
