Hannah Jun loses grip as Caroline Mathew moves up the leaderboard at Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open
Scotland’s Caroline Mathew seems to have started off her second day at the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open with a rejuvenated spirit so far and has pulled in two birdies on the opening holes of front nine.
She is now four-under on aggregate, trailing the leader by one shot for the moment. Mathew had carded four birdies and dropped two shots in her opening round to trail the leader Hannah Jun by four shots.
Overnight leader Jun, who played brilliantly on the first day, started off from back nine first and dropped a shot at par-three, 13th to reduce her lead by one shot. She is now just one shot clear of the fast approaching Mathew and will have to
tread carefully to retain her lead. She had started off the day with a three-shot lead over the rest of the field.
American Beth Allen has completed her front nine and has already made the turn claiming two birdies on the opening nine. She is now two-under on the aggregate, sharing fifth place with two other players.
South African Lee-Anne Pace also moved into contention when she carded two birdies in her front nine and is currently settled for joint fifth with Allen and Caroline Afonso.
Many of the players will be carefully scrutinized by the Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas, who still has a few places to fill before the event kicks off in September.
“It will be interesting to see who plays well at the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open this week as it may help me to decide who will make the 2011 European team,” Nicholas said. “Melissa Reid and Catriona Matthew, who have already cemented their places, are
both in the field along with a number of potential selections. Showing you can play well under pressure at the key time for selection.”
Some of the top ranking players are already confirmed their places in the team with one or more victories for the season, including Christel Boeljon, Caroline Hedwall, Suzzan Pettersen and few others.
