  1. This is a story of my son. We have had horses all our lives. He was allowed to ride ours but as a male he didn't want to ride most of them because it wasn't his. So a few years ago I got a call from a man that knew my son wanted a black kid broke pony mare. My husband said abolutley NO MORE HORSES! I went to look at her and took my son just to see what he thought of this horse this guy had. He had no clue I had intentions of buying her....LOL.  I pulled up and before I had the van shut off he was out the door looking at this beautiful morgan cross mare. She was fat! The man had her saddled and waiting the whole time playing it off as we are just looking at his new horse. He asked my son if he wanted to ride her and he couldn't get to her fast enough. We let him ride her in the round pen for about 2 hours while the man and I worked out the price for this mare. I was not impressed with her but as I watched my son talk to her while riding his face was glowing. I knew the day would come when he would outgrow her she is only 13.3 hands. Well we settled on the price and I had the long talk to my son about him growing and she would get to small and he told me it didn't matter he would always ride her. .....Well 2 1/2 years later my son rides better than me because of this lil pony mare and he feels weird riding her because his feet come to her knees and her choppy gait hurts him now that he is maturing. He asked for a bigger horse. I found one for him ....BUT....he has to sell his lil mare first and buy this one for himself. I love this lil mare she has done a great job of teaching and taking care of him. This is the sad part of owning a pony/horse that is small. So he is getting a hard lesson in the life of owning your own horse. I will make sure she has a great home with either more children or a small adult. She needs to be rode and not turned into a pasture pet. Its what she loves to do.

  2. 1024...your story made my eyes tear up...grrr...lol.

Congrats on getting summer. First horses are always so special =)

  3. congratulations!!! I know exactly what you mean. I am 16 and just come from an average city family, but this year a horse came to me at my riding lessons and my parents bought him for me. He is a 20 year old Appaloosa named Hap!

I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have my boy, and i also hate rich kids who have more than one horse. You know that they have no bond whatsoever with them on top of it.

  4. Wow you are sure a go-getter! Good for you!

  5. He hee I know how you feel hun. I am 26 and have just lived through the same hype as you.

I have wanted a horse of my own FOREVER and I finally have a beautiful foal who I recently aquired and already have a huge bond with him. Its a great feel isnt it?

Hope you enjoy your horse! Sarah x

    This is my foal!

I would love to see yours too!

  6. Congratulations to you!!

I'm sure you must have a much better appreciation for something when you work for and earn it on your own!!  Don't stop saving though....buying a horse is the easy part...it is the maintaining that gets a little rough sometimes!!

I didn't get my first horse until I was an adult and married (poor hubby..alot of 1st's he had to put up with!!).

You have every reason to be excited and proud but don't let it get to your head as you mentioned about the "rich" people....because I'm sure there is someone just like you that doesn't have a horse that might think you are "rich" too!!

Thanks for sharing this exciting time in your life with us...Good luck to you and Summer (you should add '08 to her name for when you got her).

Many happy trails and shows to you!!

  7. Congratulations on owning your horse.

  8. Congratulations, that is wonderful!  I have a happy horse story, about when I got my first horse.

I started babysitting when I was 12, and my parents would always make me put half of whatever I made into a coffee can to save.  By the time I was 16, I was taking lessons at a new barn and had fallen in love with a horse that had been brought there to be sold.  I had been bugging my parents for a horse since I was 2, and by the time I was 16 I had pretty mcuh resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't get one til I was an adult.

My parents ended up secretly working together with my riding instructor to try, vet and buy the horse at my barn I had fallen in love with.  They bought her with all the money I had been saving from babysitting.

One day they told me that we were all going to go to the barn together...which was kind of weird.  When we arrived they told me to go to the last stall at the end of the barn.  There was the horse I loved, with a big bow tied to her halter.   I bawled like a baby, I was so happy.  That day was completely and utterly surreal - in a good way!

  9. Theres nothing happier than getting your first very own horse! Good luck to both of you and i hope you have many fun (and safe!) times togeather! happy trails!!!

  10. Well done to you for saving up and getting what you want. I'm sure your horse will mean so much to you because of the hard work you have put in. I had to wait until I was in my 20's to buy my first horse and I'll never forget him. I hope you and your horse have a happy time together.

  11. Congratulations!  There is nothing better than to EARN a horse.

I didn't own my first horse until I was 25.  I bought him from a friend (who found him for me) for $350.  His name is Moon Man and he was 6 months old when I bought him.  He is going on 12 and has been my main trail horse for quite some time.  He is an American Gaited pony.

However, I worked for an extremely wealthy man's company and his daughter found out I rode horses.  Her children had been taking riding lessons and had lost interest, but she didn't want to sell the ponies since they were so well trained.  You know how kids are going back and forth.

ANYWAY, I started exercising the ponies and after a while the man started riding his horse with me and another girl in the company.  He eventually got into gaited horses (that's what I normally rode), bought 2 yearlings for us to train and then, when I left the company, he gave me the horse I had trained!  It was awesome!  I still have that horse.  He's 13.  His name is Boomerang.

Although my husband and I have several horses, we are far from rich.  We spend all our money on bills and horses.  We go on vacation maybe every other year...although that isn't always the case.  We love to ride and that is what we do.

  12. im 17, too. and when i was in 8th grade, my parents rewarded my good grades with a 3 y. o. paint gelding. i loved him soo much. but then he was diagnosed with navicular.:[ because i was competing in barrel racing, i coulnt and wouldnt keep him and put him through all that pain. so i started looking for another horse. i looked for over a year, but i couldnt find another horse that i loved, besides my friends, but she wasnt for sale. so i kept looking and looking. and then, christmas came around. i was opening my presents, and i came to a box. when i opened it, there was only a card in it. when i opened the card, it said that i got the horse that i wanted:]] but, coming from a middle class, working family, we couldnt afford 2 horses. so my parents told me that they sold my then 5 year old gelding to a retired couple for a pet:]] soo now everyone is happyyyy:] including mee

  13. The same thing happend to me a few days ago. Everyday me and my friends reaseacrh dieses, breeds, anatomy, ETC>>>EVERYTHING!

We have been saving for a while as well and have been taking lesons for 4 years now. I know exactly what you mean! Its so exciting. We all made bets on what breed age weight height color temperment, etcc.. each perosn would get and i go some right!! never would have thoguht i would have ended up with the horse. Its an amazing feeling!!!!!!!!! U JUST WANT TO CRY ! LOL>!!!! :)

YOU FEEL FINISHED AND LIKE YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SOMETING ON YOUR OWN!

  14. my happiest horse moment was when my father finally thought I was old  enough, strong enough, and experienced enough to give me his pride and joy mare that he had worked so hard to train. She was the top dog back then and no other horse could touch her in the barrels on the circuit we rode. It was a great honor when my father gave her to me. I rode her for almost 14 years after that when we finally retired her. It has been very hard for me to get back into horses since I was so attached to her. It is like stepping waaayyy out of your comfort zone when you go from being a team to starting all over with one you haven't had so much bonding time with.

  15. I've had 3 school horses bought out from under me and tried out like 5 horses to buy and 3 months ago I found the perfect TB gelding named Indie. He's 8 and I love him to death!

    please best answer this!!!!

    ohhh and Congratulations ;]]

  16. Good for you! You are indeed fortunate! I didn't OWN my first horse until I was in my 40's, tho' I'd been around them most of my life. Be safe and have fun with your new Buddy! :D

  17. Well congrats, and look at it this way...

If they're bragging, then they must be "new money."  "Old money" tends to have more class...

Or they aren't rich, just have a lot of horses.  That can make a person the "anti-rich" very quickly.

  18. Awww, good job!

    That is so awesome!

It's the best feeling in the world to ear and buy your own horse!!

You will have many years of good times and learning, have fun and enjoy it!

  19. Sure, I'll share one with you. I got my first 2 horseys when I was 15 and I'm 28 now. I own a stable of horses, I'll name them all If you'd like.
