Happy and sad men from the Korean Grand Prix (Part 1)
Like any other Formula One race, the Korean Grand Prix held last Sunday at the newly built Korean International Circuit, brought some men happiness while others left with wet eyes. This is the rule of any game in the world and is actually what brings excitement
and thrill to any sport. Both sides can never be happy.
Right from the middle of the season this race had been in the headlines. As the days kept passing, the doubts regarding this race kept mounting for the construction work on the track kept on getting delayed. Only two weeks before the final race day the track
got approval and the organisers got the green signal.
However, this only gave way to more problems. The sale of tickets was very poor, the local Koreans didnt seem very interested in a sport that was entirely new to them, and then there was a series of troubles and problems with the circuit and the paddock
and much more.
Despite all this though, once the cars came out onto the track, nothing else mattered. It was fervour, excitement and the seats kept filling. Finally, as the day ended, a race which started off with so many uncertainties turned out to be one of the most
exciting events of the 2010 Formula One calendar. A tough battle unfolded at the newly built arena that had a very slippery surface due to the newly laid asphalt layer. In little time the rain showers turned it into the slipperiest track of the calendar and
made driving a big challenge.
Action kept unfolding as the drivers struggled hard to stay safe on the sneaky circuit. Lap after lap the best drivers of the world were seen slipping, sliding and spinning. However, the bad luck of one driver would be the good luck of another. For some,
the day turned out as a curse while for others it was nothing more than a blessing.
Ferrari:
Giggles and slogans were loud at the paddock of the Italian team. A dream day came their way as one of the drivers, Fernando Alonso ended at the top of the podium, bagging the fifth victory of the season. On the other hand, the second team driver, Felipe
Massa ended his race at third place on the podium, which was a big achievement for the struggling driver.
With the top place finish, the chances of Alonso have strengthened immensely. He has gone up to the top of the Drivers’ Championship, pushing Mark Webber down to second place.
Moreover, the third place finish by Massa has soothed his itching relationship with the team. The team as well as his teammate, very asked the driver to steal as many points as possible from rivals to help Alonso win and this time Massa did the job brilliantly.
Last but of course not least, both the rival teams Red Bull and McLaren had a poor weekend due to which Ferrari’s position in the Constructers’ Championship strengthened. After having a lulled mid season the team was almost out of the battle for the constructors’
title but the last race has evoked hopes once again as Red Bull ended the day without having earned a single point while McLaren had one of its drivers finish out of the points.
Fernando Alonso:
Just imagine a day when doors keep opening one after the other all by themselves, and good luck keeps showering on you like rain drops. Such was last Sunday for the Spanish driver Fernando Alonso.
To be continued….
