  1. Why does it have to be one or the other? Find a horse that you can relate to and he to you. If it turns out he is perfect in every way but goes mad out on a hack it might be just something you have to put up with. It's nice to feel energy underneath you while out on a hack but do you really want to be coping with it all the time?

  2. Try to get something in the middle. Lively bombers as you call them tend to be great in an enclosed area and extremely interesting if you actually try to go out on one. My friend used to have one - jumped anything and perfect paces - total idiot outside of the arena.

  3. A happy hacker as you describe him is just as good as a lively horse because though he maybe safe he will be straightforward.  The lively bomber is likely to kill you or somebody else or maim you for life if it is too "Lively".  He will be a very uncomfortable and unpredictable ride.

i would go for the happy hacker.

  4. a horse thats in the middle of them. so sort of a lively happy hacker? lol

or maybe just a forward-going happy hacker.

  5. start with a decent horse. Maybe a school master that has been there done that, something of about 12 years with plenty of life left in it and one which is capable of teaching you and improving your skills. you will not want to go and buy a 3yo etc etc that needs bringing on etc as you may not have the expertese to bring it on properly. i have many TB's and youngsters but would sooner ride my cob. you don't want anything beyond your capabilities either because you could loose your confidence. but most horses will do a bit of everything, so hope you find a 'good-un'

  6. I wouldn't worry if the horse was a "happy hacker" or a "lively bomber". Instead, I would pay attention to how the horse responds to you. Take the horse that you are most comfortable with. Some horses are lovely and have the ability or knowledge to grow with you in respect to difficulty and liveliness. So whatever horse you are most comfortable with is the one you should get.

  7. !Try out some horses and pick the one that feels best for you, see if you can get one on loan if you think it might be the right one.  If you want a 'happy hacker' then get one, it's up to you, but I prefer a more lively horse so you don't make yourself tired kicking! : ) Good Luck

  8. Get a good allrounder instead..... most happy hackers are actually capable of a lot more anyway if they have a decent rider on them.

For goodness sake don't get a lively bomber or in any way over horse yourself....... that's the quickest way to lose confidence and ruin a decent horse.

Just get a nice horse that you feel confident riding, and that is capable of doing all that you want to do with it...

  9. First horse.

Get a quiet one so that you don't get hurt. As you get experience, you an move on to a livelier one.
