Happy to be fighting at the front with big teams says Robert Kubica
Robert Kubica has been in a floating mood after his magnificent performance at the Spa-Francorchamps, scoring his third podium of the season there.
If he didn’t make any mistakes during the final pit stop, the Polish driver could have finished second. Despite this, Kubica left the track pleased with his performance and the car as it had the new F-duct system running for the first time.
The race was incredible but difficult at the same time due to the unpredictable conditions of Spa that caused many drivers to make mistakes. “I didn’t make any big mistakes on the track, but unfortunately, made one in the pit lane that cost me the second place. But third place is still a very good result for the whole team and I think it’s a very nice reward for all the guys in the factory and at the track for all their hard work recently”, he said in his blog.
Kubica joined BMW Sauber in 2006 to begin his career at Formula 1. He took a podium in his very first season which greatly impressed the fans and media. Robert became a full time driver for his team the following year and proved his worth by scoring 39 points to secure the 6th place. The 25-year-old scored his first win during 2008 and gave his best season performance the same year by scoring 75 points to secure 4th place in the drivers’ rankings.
However, luck wasn’t on Robert’s side in 2009 as he was unable to score much while he also made some disappointing mistakes. Kubica signed with one of the front running teams- Renault this year after his contract with BMW Sauber expired. The Polish driver has scored 3 podiums this season up until now including his third place at the Spa Francorchamps.
Kubica has had a very consistent year with Renault. He is currently in 7th place with 104 points, only 5 points behind Felipe Massa of Ferrari. His amazing performance at Spa earned him 15 points while bringing him 3 points closer to the Brazilian. Robert’s teammate Vitaly Petrov scored 2 points and finished in 9th place while rewarding the team with a solid overall performance. The F-duct proved to be a success for the team as both the drivers said that there was a significant improvement in the car as compared to the past races in terms of pace. Renault scored a total of 17 points bringing the team closer to team Mercedes in the constructors’ standings.
Kubica’s entire Spa weekend went very well despite the changing weather conditions at the track. He finished all three practice sessions in the top five and also amazingly outpaced Sebastian Vettel by over two hundredths of a second during qualifying. “We were fighting with the McLaren and the Red Bull drivers so I’m really pleased about the performance of the car”, Kubica told the reporters. He added, “In fact, we had great pace all weekend and whatever the conditions, we were always in the top five. Finally, we got the F-duct on the car, which was working really well and it gave us a big improvement with our pace. I was very happy to be fighting at the front with the big teams so let’s hope we can continue in this direction.”
