Harbhajan Singh bags ‘Sikh Sportsperson of the Year’ award – Cricket News Update
The specialist spinner of Team India, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harbhajan-Singh-c61453, has been conferred with ‘Sikh Sportsperson of the Year’ award for his handful contribution in the Men in Blue’s glorious World Cup 2011 triumph at their own backyard.
The award was announced during World Sikh Awards 2011 festival, held in India last night. Bhajji could not receive the honour personally as he was with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians, celebrating their tremendous victory in the final game of the Champions League T20 at
Chennai.
In the absence of the MI’s full-time skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556, Harbhajan led the side to clinch the first ever title of the tournament. The spinner contributed 3 wickets in yesterday’s high-profile final clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Thus,
yesterday was Harbhajan’s day as he accomplished two mega honours.
The citation of the award stated, “Harbhajan Singh Plaha, born July 3, 1980 is a Professional Indian cricketer. A specialist bowler, he has the second highest number of Test wickets by an off-spinner. He is the 11th bowler in the history of Test cricket
to claim 400 wickets. Harbhajan Singh was a major contributor to the Indian cricket team's victory during the World Cup."
Analysts suggest that the award and the victory will prove to be good sources of relief for the bowler who has been ousted from his national squad for the first two ODIs of the home series against England.
Bhajji, due to an abdominal injury, pulled out of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 last month after playing just two Test matches. Having spent some busy days in the rehabilitation centre of National Cricket Academy (NCA), he was assigned the captaincy of the MI
as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chinnadupargea-Sachin-c50607 was on rest due to his aching toe injury.
Now, the offspinner is keen to rejoin http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 and company for the last three ODIs and the one-off T20I.
The 31-year-old made his International debut in 1998. Passing through various odds and challenges of his career, he has played 98 Test, 229 ODI and 23 T20I games so far, grabbing 406, 259 and 18 wickets respectively in the three formats. The right-hander
has also represented http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851, the two English county cricket teams.
