Indian off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, who is busy playing in the Indian Premier League for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians these days, has been issued a legal notice by central excise and taxation department, Ludhiana.
The aggressive spinner is accused of not paying service tax on his annual earnings.
According to taxation department sources, Harbhajan did not pay service tax on his annual returns in the first two editions of the lucrative Twenty20 league.
Harbhajan, who has picked up 12 wickets for Mumbai so far in the ongoing tournament, has not paid 11.5 million rupees of service tax on his income through advertising campaigns for his IPL franchise.
Although, the off-spinner has yet to respond to this matter, the department has confirmed the issuance of a notice.
A central excise and taxation department official, Ludhiana, said, “We had got reports about the irregularities in the submission of service tax by Harbhajan Singh. Our department has calculated this service tax under the business support services category.
A notice has been sent at Harbhajan's residence”.
Harbhajan, nicknamed Bhajji, lives in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750’s famous city of Jalandhar, which comes under the authority of central and taxation department, Chandigarh region. Harbhajan’s case is not the first tax violation by an Indian cricketer.
Last year, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yuvraj-Singh-c98364 was slapped with a hefty fine of 15 million rupees for not paying tax money within due time.
“There are two other cricketers of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833, who have not paid service tax out of their income from first two editions of IPL. We would also send notices to them in the coming days”, said the official.
Harbhajan, who made his debut in 1998, has served India in 83 Tests and 226 One Day Internationals (ODI). He has 393 Test and 255 ODI wickets to his credit.
There was some news circulating in the media that some senior members, including Harbhajan, are likely to skip India's upcoming tour to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760.
