hmm...bringing a baby along while mountain biking isnt a very good  idea ....

This is a relative question, because best to you isn't likely the best to me, the next guy.  There isn't a best, just best for you.

Go to the bike shop.  Try several.  Buy the one that meets your needs and budget.

Edit:  FWIW, you can use a kid seat on a MTB, there are several varieties.  Some the kid rides on the top tube, some behind the adult.  I personally wouldn't take a toddler on my local MTB trails because if you tip your bike the kid has very little chance of protecting himself...and will get whipped into the ground when the bike falls.  On the local paved paths where my chance of crashing over a tree root or log is minimal, I would have no problems with it.
