Hard to term Tapizar’s BC Dirt Mile success as a fluke
It wasn’t just a matter of luck for Tapizar, who comfortably captured the first rank in the Grade 1, Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita early in November. In the hands of C. Nakatani, the 4-year-old worked really hard in order to bag the big prize worth
$1 million.
The bookmakers did not show much respect to him, giving him the low odds of 20 to 1. Their move turned out to be a wrong decision, as the Steven Asmussen-trained pressed the leader on outside right at the start.
From nowhere, he managed to get his head in front a couple of furlongs before the finishing line. After taking the front row, he never looked back, and kept running brilliantly.
He was well ahead of the rest of the pack entering the final furlong. Further stretching his advantage in the last 100 yards, the big fellow easily claimed the top position by two and a quarter lengths.
It was a shocking result for many, especially the 5-2 favourite, Emcee, who eventually finished sixth on the chart. Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC, the son of Tapit did not allow anyone to take the game away from him. Tail Trip, who was runner-up, gave
him a lot of hard time, but was never in a position to match the winner.
"His success at Santa Anita allowed us to think about this race to begin with, especially off such a bad race in the Kelso," Asmussen said. "He trained as good as ever out here, looked a picture of health, and ran well."
"This never gets old. Winning a race on Breeders' Cup day is special; it's special just to get the chance to compete." Nakatani said. "It's extremely gratifying. We had a good trip. He got away in good order. Last time, he just didn't handle the track. I
told Steve to go on to the Breeders' Cup, and I'm glad he did."
Tapizar was retired a few days ago, and would move to stud at the Beck family's Gainesway Farm in Lexington next year. He finished off his career in style, and no one can take the credit away from him. His fans will always cherish the sweet memories, and
those who believe the glory was just a stroke of luck should change their opinion.
