1. Joe Louis - the fightingest champion of all time.

  2. Foreman, most certainly, no doubt about it! Did you ever see the footage of him getting ready to fight Ali in Africa? Amazing!

  3. If you're talking HARDEST puncher, of the champions, that would have to be George Forman. However, I think Ernie Shavers might have him beat overall. If it's not Shavers it's certainly Forman. Both punch harder than everyone else.

Sonny Liston is right behind these two and Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis are right behind him. Joe Frazier could punche very hard too but the guys on this list have him beat.

Now if we're talking MOST EFFECTIVE Puncher that would be Joe Louis. Louis isn't as powerful as any of the above but he gets the BEST USE of his Power. IOW, Joe Louis is a Better Puncher, using his style and technique to bet the most of the power he has.

Forman had the Power but punched wrong. As hard as he could punch it's amazing to think what he could have done if someone had actually taught him to use his power properly. George made Great use of his power during his second career. However, he didn't have the speed to enhance it.

Shavers also had more power than Louis but didn't have the stamina or balance to use it late, nor the speed to use it early against mobil opponents. Again, he has MORE Power but Louis USES the power he has in a better way.

It's not easy to tell exactly who THE hardest puncher is but they can certainly be divided into classes. It's NOT so hard to tell who belongs in one class as opposed to another.

    TOP CLASS PUNCHERS

    Forman

    Shavers

    Liston

    Tyson

    Lewis

Next class: Louis, Marciano, Dempsey, Frazier,

Joe Louis was the Best Puncher

George Forman was the Hardest of the Champions

Ernie Shavers was the Hardest overall.

  4. Foreman

    Shavers

    Liston

    Tyson

    Marciano

    Dempsey

    Louis

    Frazier

  5. Punching power is a function of three things: How hard a fighter can hit; how well his opponents can take a punch; and how well the puncher can deliver his power punches.

If you just measured impact power by having boxers hit a heavy bag, which is defenseless, there are any number of fighters who might win the "hardest puncher" designation. But a good opponent is not a heavy bag standing there waiting to be hit. If a fighter can't deliver his power it's of no use to him.

I think Galactus has it right. Foreman was probably the hardest/most effective puncher. If he hit an opponent he could hurt him, and he could punch to the body as well as the head. Shavers had awesome power but he had delivery problems when he faced a quality opponent, and he was mainly a head puncher.

Cleveland Williams was one of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history. In his prime he had one of the highest knockout percentages in the history of boxing. But in his first fight with Sonny Liston he clocked Sonny with a dynamite hook and, according to what I've read, Sonny hardly blinked. Sonny said afterwards that was the hardest punch he had ever taken. Sonny's chin was granite so the Big Cat's punch didn't help him in that fight -- or the next one.

Foreman was a great puncher, but he was a "winger." He seldom threw straight punches. He put Frazier down several times with those punches but couldn't keep him down. If he had thrown straight punches, like the one he hit Ron Lyle with in the 5th round of their fight, I think Frazier would have stayed down.

Floyd Patterson had a glass chin. When his chin met Sonny Liston's hard punc he stayed down, each time in the first round. Sonny, IMO, was second only to Louis in being a hard/effective puncher. Maybe he was even better. But we remember Sonny for his two fights with Ali and his final fight against Leotis Martin. And some people remember George for his fight with Ali. Too bad, but that's the way it is.

  7. Most boxing experts say shavers hit the hardest and his high ko percentage speaks for itself(74 wins with 68 KO,many in the first round) HOWEVER based on what i have seen i think foreman hit harder than shavers but was a lot less accurate, foreman pretty much bullied his opponents until they fell, he didn't care where his punches landed because he knew he was going to hurt you anyway....shavers was more accurate than foreman and not many people survived his straight right to the head, however he lacked the stamina and the chin to be effective round after round.both Ali and Holmes (two of the best chins in the heavyweight division) claimed that Shavers was the hardest punchers they faced.....and once during a fight shavers hit his opponent so hard that his glove actually imploded (true story)......so i think that either him or foreman should be considered the hardest hitters ever, Mike tyson and Joe Louis had high KO percentages because they were great finishers and were extremely accurate with their punches, louis had a lot of power and he knew how to use it, if you watch videos of louis on youtube you will notice one thing he NEVER threw punches aimlessly, every single punch he threw was aimed for a specific spot and was timed flawlessly and that made him a very dangerous puncher, the same goes for mike tyson, iron mike was a very accurate in fighter due to his style, he knew how to get inside his opponent's defenses to land deadly hooks and uppercuts that often ended his fights early and that made him a dangerous and fearful opponent for many heavyweights at the time however in terms of raw punching power there's no doubt in my mind, it's between shavers and foreman.
