Actually, this is a series of questions:

1) What is the hardest type of metal?

2) Of the following, which is the hardest:

Steel, Iron, Stone

3) If you were to build as close to an indestructable structure as possible, what materials would you use, assuming you had an endless budget and nessicary tools?

  2. 1; Metal carbides tend to be very hard, but when you say "type of metal" I'm not completely sure that would include carbides

    2; do you count diamond as a stone? how about ruby and sapphire (corundum)?  both are harder than steel, which is harder than iron. Some steels can be harder than some common stones, but you need to be more specific for a precise answer.

    For 3 I would use a deep hole, preferable under a mountain. Ever watch the TV show SG1? or look up "Cheyenne Mountain"

  3. search for the composite steel alloy called " martensite "..

    its very strong but has its weakpoints...read about it....

    there is no perfect material... if u increase the toughness of the material ,then some other property will decrease....

    plus, any material can undergo several cheap processing which can make it break very easily.... like heating it to high temperature and then suddenly freezing it... steel becomes as weak as paper...

  4. pure iron is a very soft metal.

    stone? depends on what stone really.....

    the hardest metal is carbon steel alloy i forgot the number.... like 1090 or sumthing..

    but its not the strongest metal.

    its brittle and not ductile enough to use for strong structures.

    if it gets frozen, even a small knock can shatter it.

    hardness is different to yield or ultimate strength....

    if you wanted an indestructable structure, you would want infinte ultimate strength and a huge yield strength... hardness would be kinda irrelevant.

    one would make it out of a single gigantic synthetic carbon nano tube. current technology allows for only tiny nano tubes, but with enough money and research larger nano tubes probably will be made.
