Question:

Hardware store for PCV hose?

I just bought a PCV valve at Checker Auto, but they didn't have any hose to go along with it. I've checked numerous auto stores and they don't stock any PCV hose for some reason. I'm wondering if I can just go to the hardware store and get some rubber hose that fits the valve. Would this serve the same purpose, or is PCV hose made of a special material other than standard rubber hose?

Thanks!

  1. you should be able to fine a hose the same size about anywhere nothing runs thru it but air so any kind wil work

  2. Been there; done that. No problem. I've even used fuel hose. It lasts longer.

  3. Rubber hose that you intend to use should be oil and gasoline  resistant, not  Polyvinyl chloride  hose (PVC)?  Thats not the same.  PVC hose will deteriorate quickly resulting in a vacuum leak and issues related to them,  Your Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve is exposed to oil and fuel vapors, so stick with automotive type hose, I can't believe an automotive parts store would not have any correct type hose!

  4. Oil vapor from your crankcase also runs through the pcv hose. I would at least get something that is oil resistant.
