Harlequins RL will go back to old name, London Broncos, for 2012 season
The BBC reporter, Ian Ramsdale, disclosed on Tuesday, October 18, that Harlequins RL will take back their old name, London Broncos, for the 2012 season.
However, this news has been leaked early and will be officially confirmed from The Stoops’ chairman, David Hughes, almost a month from now.
The name is not the only big change that the club is making and there is even bigger changes expected such as the change in Quins’ game venue. Quins have spent their last seven years at their current premise and are now looking for a replacement which will
be announced later.
This venue change was a bleak possibility during the running season and the news was withheld until the wrap up of the current season. Through BBC sources it had also surfaced that the soon-to-be, London Broncos, will reveal their new playing kit along with
their latest logo.
Sources at BBC London verified that the chairman of the club shared with them that there is a name change in the pipeline for the Quins. While referring to his conversation with the Quins’ chairman, Ramsdale said, "It was 99% confirmed by the end of the
season and I understand the remaining issues have been resolved. The idea of a name change has been around for over a year. With a desire to have their own identity, in order to build the rugby league profile in the south, a move away from the links with such
a distinguished rugby union name and kit was seen as a key step. A number of other options were considered after the club consulted the fans with a survey.”
It was also revealed that that the club was considering a name change for quite some time and in order to go about it the right way the club also underwent a survey. This step was important for the club because they did not want fans to be ruled out of big
decisions.
If the reports are correct, the club will be going back to its old name, to commemorate their glory years as London Broncos.
