Harlequins give two-year professional contract to Samoan international flanker Maurie Fa'asavalu
English professional Rugby Union side, Harlequins, has announced the handing over of a new deal to the Samoan international back row forwards’ player, Maurie Fa'asavalu, which will allow him to stay at the club until the end of the 2013/14 season. Officials at the club have confirmed the re-signing of Fa'asavalu in a statement released on their website on Wednesday, September 21.
During his stay at the club so far, he has delivered some memorable performances, which includes his performance against Munster Rugby and against Stade Francais in the Amlin Challenge Cup.
Harlequins Director of Rugby, Conor O'Shea, has expressed his delight on the resigning of the Samoan international Fa'asavalu, who is currently on national duty and is representing Samoa in the ongoing 2011 Rugby World Cup.
O’Shea said, “Maurie has made a huge impact on both players and supporters alike and his example as a professional in everything he does is one which all young players should follow.” O’Shea has praised Fa'asavalu’s ball handling and tackling skills. He added that his different style of play overall is beneficial for the club and can take the opposition with an element of surprise.
Maurie Fa'asavalu has expressed his excitement on signing his new deal with the club. He said, “I am really excited to have re-signed with Harlequins, from the end of this season, for another 2 years.”
Fa'asavalu added that he is relieved after securing his future and can solely concentrate on his rugby now. He added that his family is enjoying their stay in the country and have adjusted to London’s lifestyle. He has expressed his hope that he and his team-mates will be able to bring more silverware to club.
The 31-year-old Fa'asavalu started his professional Rugby career in the Rugby League code. He made 164 Rugby League appearances for St Helens before switching Union code to join Harlequins Rugby in 2010. He made 19 appearances for the Quins last season and will join the rest of the squad at the end of Samoa’s 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign.
