Harlequins hand over contract extension to talented winger Sam Smith – Rugby Union News
Twickenham Stoop based English professional Rugby Union club, Harlequins, have signed an extension in contract with their talented, young winger Sam Smith. Officials at the club have confirmed the deal wirh Smith in a statement released on their website on Wednesday, November 16.
The new contracte will extend the stay of Smith at the Harlequins until the end of the 2013/14 season.
Harlequins Director of Rugby, Conor O'Shea has expressed his excitement on retaining the services of Smith as he said, “We are thrilled Sam has committed to us.”
O’Shea has praised Smith’s abilities, skills and professional attitude. He particularly singled out Smith’s impressive try scoring skills. He further added, “Sam is an example to all young players with how he conducts himself, both on and off the pitch. I have no doubt that with his work ethic he will continue to improve in all aspects of his game, and score a huge number of tries for this club.”
Surrey born Smith is a product of Harlequins academy. He caught the attention of the Harlequins senior team coaching staff during Quins’ EPDG developmental program. Smith was handed over his first professional contract in 2007. He made his first XV debut for Harlequins against Connacht in August 2008. The match was played as part of 2008/09 season’s preparations.
The 21-year-old Smith has so far made 22 appearances for the Quins since his first grade debut for Harlequins during their Anglo Welsh Cup encounter against the Newcastle Falcons in November 2009.
Smith has already represented England in the international arena at Under 16s, under 18s and under 20s level. He was part of the England under 20s side which lifted the 2008 Six Nations Grand Slam title and also represented England during 2010 Junior World Championship.
Smith has expressed his pleasure on signing his new professional contract with the Harlequins. He said, “I am excited to have re-signed to such a great club. I have always wanted to be a Quin and I am enjoying every bit of it”.
Smith has praised the facilities offered by the club and thanked the club management and coaching staff for their support.
