Harlequins win seventh consecutive game of Aviva Premiership by defeating Exeter Chiefs – Rugby News
2011/12 Aviva Premiership season’s table leader, Harlequins, have stretched their unbeaten run to seven games as they overcome the challenge of the Exeter Chiefs in their seventh round encounter
on Saturday, October 29. Harlequins hosted the Chiefs at The Stoop, London, as they overcame the Chiefs, 19 – 13.
The highlight of the game without any doubt is the strong second half performance of the Chiefs, in which they came back from a deficit of 9 points to finish the game trailing by just 6 points.
Playing in front of their home crowd, the winners started the match strongly. Harlequins were first to score points in the match through their fly half Nick Evans' second minute penalty. During
the next quarter of the game, both teams tried to establish control over the game as both teams fought for the ball and territory possession.
However, only Harlequins were successfully able to score as they claimed points through Evans, who successfully kicked the penalty during the 26th minute of the game to extend the
lead to six points. Quins sustained a blow as their impressive second row forwards player, George Robson, was sin binned in the 28th minute of the game.
Harlequins did well to keep Chiefs scoreless as they played with a man down. Evans scored his third penalty in the 39th minute of the game to take the scorecard reading 9 – 0. The
scorecard read the same at the end of the first half.
Sharks started the second half strongly. They reduced their lead to six points following their fly half Ignacio Mieres 47th minute of the game. Sharks were enjoying a good passage
of play as they bagged thirteen points in a span of seven minutes.
Mieres scored his second penalty in the 52nd minute of the game. Sharks sent their winger, Bryan Rennie, to score the first try of the match, which was followed by Mieres conversion
to take the scorecard reading 13 – 9.
Harlequins replied strongly with Evans fourth penalty in the 58th minute of the game. Couple of minutes later, their fullback Mike Brown landed the second try of the game to put
the hosts in lead again. Evans followed with a conversion to take the scorecard reading 19 – 13. Both teams tried hard to score in the remaining 18 minutes of the second half, but they failed to do so.
After their seven games, Harlequins finished on top of the table with 30 points, which includes their two bonus points.
