Question:

Harley Davidson Ultra w/ Intermittent idling problem?

2003 Ultra Classic after a good 100 mile ride sometimes bike stops idling. Bike will restart but to idle, throttle must be feathered or bike will die.

Another problem (maybe connected) Main fuse will pop while riding. Main fuse has been replaced twice. Sometimes after the main fuse pops and comes back on the bike developes this idling problem.

Last ride taken the main fuse popped on highway at 70 mph. Everything shut down for about 1 second( bike came back on by itself) and then the idling problem started after getting off the highway.

ANY HELP?

Thanks Dave

  1. The crank position sensor could be weak.  or the throttle stop s***w could have backed out.

Of course neither of these 2 items will cause the circuit breaker to blow so I would start out with trying to figure out where the short in the system is.  since you was riding at the time then it's a vibration that's causing the short.

  2. check behind air breather if any varnishing from gas is occuring Jets maybe clogged may need flush out with say some premium grade gas add additive like 104 octane boost or maybe carb cleaner spray?

  3. If its EFI, looking at the throttle body, on the right hand side there is a little rubber boot around a little shaft. That shaft moves un and out to control you idling. When its cold the shaft moves way out, after it warms up the shaft will move back, slowing the idle speed. This thing is run by electricity, maybe the fuse problem is shutting the juice off to that idle controler and causing the problem. It's a good idea to slid that boot back and apply a little oil to the shaft every now and then. Hope that helps.

  4. First I would fix the problem with the fuse. Loosing power to the ECM is not a good thing to do at any speed. Assuming you have fuel injection. It may have corrupted the MAP. Especially if you have had a stage 1 kit or upgrades. I would start looking for trouble codes.
