Harley Davidson question?

I have a 2005 XL 1200C. I took it down the highway about 6 miles and it ran fine. When I got off the highway it started to backfire through the carb everytime I would take off from a stop. I have to feather the throttle to get up some rpm to get it to take off. It idles OK and once I'm running it seems to be fine. Any ideas??? Ignition maybe?

  1. I would say it's in the carb.

  2. Sounds like the ignition timing is off.

    Or

Could be a tank of bad gas or water in the gas.

  3. Bad gas, baby....

    filter, fuel line...

  4. Backfire through carb indicates rich condition, backfire through exhaust too lean.

Buy a fuel injected Victory it won't do that. Then you can stop posting questions on how to become a mc mechanic to keep your bike running. What a concept !

  5. How often do you drive it!! How old is the gas in it as well??

Could need a good tune up, have you brought it in since you bought it for the break in tune up???

Some people put alot of miles on there bikes and I know someone with the same bike you have that only has 97 miles on it!!! so it was driven from the dealer to the home and never driven!! Can't quit figure them out!! But anyway, it sounds like old gas and it may possibly need a tuneup!!

  6. Plugs are fouling , dont use the choke warm the bike up slowly , change the plugs

  7. It sounds like bad valve timing or ignition timing to me. If you run a compession test and it is good then suspect ignition timing. Hope this helps you out.

  8. Wow.....cant help you sorry......hope someone can, maybe we can arrange a ride for me.......x

  9. What was done during the tune-up? Was it the regular 10K mile service? It does seem to be a carb issue.

Backfire through the carb can be from a rich condition.

Food for thought - Factory filters do not like water. HD recommends blowing them out with compressed air to clean. But, they plug up if they get wet. Blowing them out doesn't clean them.

  10. get rid of the "girls" bike and buy a real  bike...Problem solved..

  11. sounds like its rich, but you have fuel injection,  take back under warranty.

  12. Make sure your battery connection's are tight.

  13. All I know is Beano works for me.....not too sure if it'll help the bike's backfire but its worth a try.

  14. sound as if the sparks need cleanin

    ignition no

thumbs down and you want a bike fixed your havin a laugh a bet yous you've only got a bmx between you

it's the plugs they need cleanin or renewed (plugs _ sparks)
