  1. Trying to think where I found some of that info, I do know sales went up for a few years right after AMF bought them and I do know AMF retooled the main plant not long after they bought them, I will paste some of the link below from the New York Times. Its a 4 page article, pretty interesting  and fair to both the bad choices and the good choices Harley has made over the years  ........................................

When the 1982 recession hit, Harley was close to going belly-up. The next year the company asked for, and received, tariff protection. But even as it publicly castigated the Japanese, Harley was trying to mimic them. Harley executives started touring Japanese plants to figure out what it was they did so well. ...................................

Harley slashed its headquarters staff and adopted a version of Japanese Just-in-Time inventory control in which suppliers deliver quality-guaranteed parts that are used immediately rather than placed in stock......................................

Today, Harley executives acknowledge that Harley's troubles were internal. ''For years we tried to figure out why the Japanese were beating us so badly,'' said Vaughn L. Beals, Harley's tall, dapper chairman and chief executive. ''First we thought it was their culture. Then we thought it was automation. Then we thought it was dumping. Finally we realized the problem was us, not them.''

  2. There exists a preternatural loyalty to the Harley name. Unfortunately this brand loyalty has not resulted in any meaningful change in design technology. Certainly they have  the wherewith all to introduce a newer species of motorcycle but ,given the worldwide demand for h**l's Angel want-to-be's the current regime can do no more than appease their constituents.Try finding a  more efficient valve train, any form of radical head design and you will by met by  a monumental form of web obfuscation.Basically AMF sucked, big time. Their machines were a disgrace to American Manufacturing. They were eager to join the bandwagon but failed to live up to expectations.

  3. The production numbers from 1903-1981 are listed in the back of The Harley Davidson Motor Company-An Official Eighty Year History, David Wright 1983 LOC# 83-5332
