Everyone surely knows of Throughbreds. Riding horses and what not. But has anyone heard of Standard breds??? My family has been in that industry wayyyyyy before my time. Its the greatest thing I've ever known and it breaks my heart that no one knows what I'm talking about. Every chance I can get to go to the races, I'm there! I love it. Does anyone else know of this industry? Or is in this industry??

  1. Harness racing is a great sport.  What I really like is that the horses race for weeks in a row until they need some time off.  Thoroughbreds which only race every 2 or 3 weeks.  The down side of this is that I tend to fall in love with some of the horses I see often.  That makes it hard to bet objectively.

  2. Of course we know about Harness racing and Standardbreds.  It's true that it doesn't get as much attention as thoroughbred racing, but it's still a popular sport.  It's on TVG all the time.  It gets national coverage for the big race in the summer (I don't remember what it's called, but I think Donato Hanover won last year).  There's actually a lot of harness tracks and our harness track (Northfield Park) does a lot better than its thoroughbred counterpart (Thistledown).  So Harness racing is far from a dead sport.  It could be worse for you... you could be in the steeplechase industry in the US which has to be the least known and broadcasted professional sport in the country.

  3. I am involved deeply into harness racing partnerships. I race at the meadowlands, Dover and Chicago. Love it

  4. i love harness racing, better than thoroughbred racing because the post times are shorter and therefore running more live races quicker (i need the action!). its better as an owner in my opinion because 1. they race more often and 2. its much cheaper. meadowlands racing is by far the best and i also enjoy woodbine and mohawk up in canada

knmnmiami, ur thinking of the hambletonian, which yes, donato hanover did win (i happened to be at the meadowlands that day, and he capped my winning pick4 ticket which paid almost 1200 for a dollar!) it does receive national coverage by cbs. the meadowlands pace also receives national coverage. also, a very popular older trotting race known as the elitlopp is the most well known race internationally

  5. sure saw the great" joe o'brien drive in the 70's

at hollywood and los alamitos....and also saw

niatross when he came out west and set a new

    record at hollywood park!!!!!

  6. My family has been into Standardbreds for many years, mainly racing in Chicago and Indiana. It's great to have both Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs available close by.

When we had a Hambletonian contender we sen t him up to Meadowlands.

I love SBs heart and stamina. It's  a wonderful sport for families and easier to get into than TBs. We also have American Saddlebred show horses so we're quite busy with horses.

I do love TB racing however, and I follow the Triple Crown trail and stakes racing.
