Haroon Khan chooses trainer Oliver Harrison for professional career guidance – Boxing Special
Haroon Khan, brother of former IBF and WBA light welterweight titlist Amir Khan, has chosen trainer Oliver Harrison to assist him with his professional start. Harrison is the same trainer who guided Khan but was dumped by the Briton fighter soon enough.
Haroon Khan is a Commonwealth bronze medallist who has joined Khan’s newly formed promotion to initiate his professional career.
“I’m very excited to be working with a really talented trainer like Oliver,” said Haroon who will be putting on his gloves to fight a professional fighter soon.
“He’s helped so many fighters over the years, including my brother when he first turned professional, and I’m sure he’ll do the same with me,” he added.
Although Haroon Khan is quite positive about Harrison forging him into a ring god, Amir Khan did not believe in the same when he left Harrison. In 2008, the former light welterweight titlist dumped Harrison on a short notice with a world title fight at the
corner.
Back then Harrison was shocked with Khan’s decision, as he was unaware of the consequences that pushed the Briton fighter to quite his gym. Khan’s decision proved wrong when he suffered the first knockout defeat of his career at the hands of Breidis Prescott
in the first round.
Khan then went on to train with Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach.
“I’m itching to get in the gym and knuckle down, and with Oliver in my corner I know that I can achieve all of my dreams,” Haroon added.
Haroon, 21, is being considered as the next Amir Khan inside the ropes but he does not hold the same achievements. Amir ‘The King’ Khan came into professional boxing with an Olympic Gold medal, which added weight to his portfolio. For Haroon, being the brother
of a former champion and the owner of a boxing promotion is probably one major advantage. Much like his elder brother, even he can score fights on his own will, avoiding the ones that pose a threat to his career.
Khan is scheduled to face undefeated American fighter Carlos Molina on December 15 in Los Angeles. He is working with trainer Virgil Hunter to rebuild his career.
