The International Cricket Council chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, revealed on Thursday that he had a plan of trapping the cricketers indulged or ready to indulge in match fixing activities through sting operations but the plan could not be executed after
it was opposed by the member countries.
Lorgat, in an interview with a leading news channel, said that he had thought of carrying out some sting operations after ‘News of the World’ brought three http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 cricketers involved in spot-fixing to the surface. But he said that the national boards were
against the idea as they considered it a form of ‘entrapment’.
"I thought when this issue came up last year that perhaps we could have a 'mystery shopper'," revealed Lorgat in a TV show. "We would have to get the players' federations consenting to it and they of course opposed it and were not happy, they considered
it a form of entrapment," he added further.
When asked about the nature of the sting operations he was planning, the ICC CEO said, “some people posing as bookmakers approach players and see if those players report along with our codes of conduct."
He further said that another way to check corruption in the game, was to keep a check on the bank accounts of players but that was also impossible as privacy issues were involved in this case. He said that it was a bit more complex as it involved human rights
issues and legalities that were to be understood properly.
The ICC chief said that the governing body was trying to enhance its anti corruption drive to make sure that the players involved in illegal activities are caught by the ICC itself and not by newspapers or tabloids.
"We are doing a review of our whole process and all of our systems right now,” said Lorgat. "We have engaged an independent firm to conduct that review and I'm hopeful that some constructive recommendations will come up that will enhance or improve the way
we are currently tackling the issue," he added.
Last year, a British tabloid, News of the World carried out a sting operation in which three Pakistan players, including the then Test skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Amir-c76675, were found to be involved in conspiring some deliberate no balls
against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 at Lord’s. All the three players were handed lengthy bans by an ICC tribunal earlier this year.
