Haroon Lorgat says DRS in World Cup proved to be successful - Cricket Update
The chief of the International Cricket Council (ICC), http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, claimed that the Decision Review System (DRS), which was slammed by most cricket pundits at the time of its launch, proved to be a successful one during the ICC World Cup 2011.
"DRS was successful. It has improved umpiring standards by more than five per cent. There has been no blatant errors or no complaints from teams over decision that could have affected the outcome of the match,” Lorgat said.
The ICC CEO further voiced sentiments that the system has emerged as an entertaining and exciting aspect of the modern game of cricket, saying "the spectators in the stadium valuing the DRS make it a lot more entertaining.”
International Cricket Council has already revealed a fact sheet which showed that the accurate decisions in the World Cup have risen from an average of 90.18 percent to 97.82 percent due to the help of DRS.
The system was first introduced with the sole purpose of reviewing the controversial decisions made by the umpires on the ground. DRS received a huge positive reaction from coaches and players since its introduction. However, many former umpires showed their
concern that the system had undermined the authority of the field umpire.
The review system made a huge difference in the mega event because not only did it increase the percentage of accurate decision making but also showed the standards of field umpiring in the big tournament. Pakistani Umpire Aleem Dar, ‘Best Umpire of the
Tournament’, was the only umpire who got none of his decision turned down by Decision Review System.
Lorgat also made it clear that there had no amendments been made yet in the controversial 2.5 metre rule. The CEO further vowed to take every step to keep cricket clean from the virus of match fixing and not to make any sort of compromise over the goodwill
of the game.
Apart from putting his thoughts forward about DRS, Lorgat also confirmed that the next showpiece event, which will be hosted by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 in 2015, will include only 10 sides, and the format could be similar to the one used in the 1992 edition
of the tournament.
