Haroon Lorgat set to review SLC governance independently – Cricket News Update
Former ICC Chief Executive and recently appointed special advisor to Sri Lanka Cricket, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719 is all set to conduct an independent review of the board’s governance, with the intent to provide recommendations for financial management, and suggestions
for overhauling the domestic cricket structure. Lorgat’s suggestions are then due to be made public after his 3-month tenure with the board comes to an end.
Lorgat, a chartered accountant who in addition to his experience at the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, and the organising and finance committees for the 2003 ICC World Cup, has been roped in as a consultant
by the Sri Lankan board. He is expected to offer recommendations regarding the management of finances and the revamping of the domestic cricket structure.
“Finance is one of the most crucial areas at the moment,” Ranatunga said while speaking to
ESPNCricinfo. “[Lorgat] can look at our budgets and see where we need to cut back and see where we need to spend, in order to improve our financial situation.”
The Sri Lankan board has been highly unstable with regards to finances, after having racked up debuts of up to $70 million following the ICC World Cup 2011, which required the renovation of the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and the construction of two new
stadiums – in Hambantota and Pallekele. As a result, the SLC’s players went for eight months without their salaries. Lorgat will be provided access to the SLC’s budget information in order to compile his suggestions.
In addition to fiscal instability, the board also faces the challenge of restructuring domestic cricket competitions. The board is contemplating changes in first-class cricket, such as cutting down the domestic two-tier competition to a single tier one,
and cutting out 6 of the 20 competing teams. For this purpose, Lorgat will be speaking, among many others, to the clubs which participate in the first-class competition.
“It's important for Mr Lorgat to talk to the stakeholders in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 cricket, which include the clubs, media and even the public, in order to provide a wide review,” Ranatunga said.
