Newcastle United’s veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper is ready to fill in for the injured Tim Krul, and is anxious to impress and make his claim for a starting spot in the Magpies’ squad.
The goalkeeper says he is in fine shape and would love the chance to step in front of goal for Newcastle if Tim Krul is unable to play in Monday night’s clash against Everton.
Krul sustained an elbow injury whilst training with the Netherlands squad while out on international duty. The Dutch shot stopper had been called up by new Oranje boss Louis Van Gaal for the national team following his impressive performances for Newcastle.
Krul returned to Tyneside after pulling out of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maarten-Stekelenburg-c22998 in replacing Krul in goal.
The young goalkeeper has been so impressive for Newcastle that he managed to keep out veteran goalkeeper Harper out of the starting 11. However, the player’s injury could rule him out of Newcastle’s next game and presents a golden opportunity for Steve Harper
to feature for the side.
Harper was handed his first competitive start for Newcastle in the Europa League double legged tie against Atromitos, and will be hoping for more first team action. The 37-year old goalkeeper was given his last Premier League start back in April last year,
but is ready to step up and play.
"I feel the best I've felt for a long time," he told the local press and media.
"We all knew that this season there was a chance to get games under our belts.”
"I had a chat with the manager at the start of pre-season and he said there would be an opportunity. We all want to remind him we're ready if needed.”
"Having the extra games gives you that level of competitiveness. It's good for everybody."
