  1. If staff members at the organization where you work have engaged in harassment of other staff, including volunteers, or the community and have created a hostile work environment, staff and volunteers need to:

-- document events you yourself have witnessed, not just that you have heard about. The events needs to have dates, locations and detail how this event was illegal, violent or harassing.

-- provide this document to each member of the board of directors at the organization and, if any complaints relate to sexual or ethnic-based harassment, to your local Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The documentation must be dispassionate and opinion-free. It must be based solely on facts and eye-witness accounts.

You have a choice to continue to volunteer or to resign. Also, note that you may be fired as a volunteer as a result of your complaint - volunteering is not a right. If the harassment you have detailed is annoying but not illegal, you may have no recourse but to resign and hope the organization's board of directors take action.
