Harrington’s Creative Cause to go up against Baffert’s Liaison and Bodemeister in the San Felipe
Mike Harrington trained, Creative Cause, in his juvenile season broke out as a new juvenile sensation when he broke his maiden at first asking and landed grade 2 race called the Best Pal Stakes over at six and a half furlongs, but couldn’t convert his first
three career starts into a hat-trick as he fell away to finish second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity.
However, in his next start he bounced back to win his first ever grade 1 race when he downed the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The Norfolk win was a real boost for both the horse and his connections, because he was stretched out in distance
for the first time from 7 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles, and switched his surface to dirt from synthetic.
The Norfolk hero then couldn’t continue winning in the biggest stage of his juvenile career, the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last fall at Churchill Downs, where he finished third, and in his seasonal debut, the 3-year-old finished third as well in the
Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita at about seven furlongs.
Now the son of Giant’s Causeway, out of mare Dream of Summer by Siberian Summer, Creative Cause will be stretched out back in distance in the San Felipe Stakes, and face Bob Baffert’s pair in the Grade 2, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes at about 1 1/16 miles.
Liaison and Bodemeister are taking training from a trainer, who has trained nine Triple Crown race winners, and he knows how to go about it, as Bob Baffert prepares his duo for the mid-season clash of the titans.
Liaison is without a doubt the best 3-year-old in the division, but Bodemeister has been developing fast into a good sophomore, which ultimately enhances Baffert’s chances in the Triple Crown this year.
The colt won his maiden special weight in an impressive manner at second asking over at a mile this year, and he has been training like he is hungry to get out on the track again.
Mike Harrington on the other hand might not have a 3-year-old impressive string like Bob Baffert, but he has Creative Cause, and last time they checked, it took only one horse to win a race, so Harrington would weigh his chances as much as Baffert come the
Kentucky Derby.
