Harris English fires a bogey-free round at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Harris English fired a bogey-free five-under par 65 in the opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational to share the second spot on the leaderboard on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
English got off to a great start as he recorded a birdie on the second hole (11th) he played at the Colonial Country Club.
Thereafter, he continued to play some good shots that took him to three-under for the round through the back nine of course.
The front nine witnessed him add another two birdies that allowed him to settle one stroke behind the leader Zach Johnson.
According to him, he mainly focused on converting the putts that allowed him to remain bogey free through the round.
“I had a lot of confidence going in this week,” English said. “I'm really hitting the ball well. Three bogey-free rounds I have had in a row which I've never done before. I'm playing solid golf and not really getting out of position. I'm getting my putter
going. I'm just hitting it to 15 or 20 feet a lot and seemed to be making a good many of those”.
“It's just been good. I put four wedges in the bag last week and took out my 4-iron and hitting my 3-iron a little weaker to fill some gaps,” he added.
The golf commentators believe that English played really well and he was well composed throughout the opening round.
Each shot he made was calculated and he tried not to give any chance of birdie that he received during the day.
Moreover, he accepted the challenge offered by the wind on the course and defeated the Mother Nature with his classy style.
Tom Gillis, Jason Dufner and Kyle Reifers were the other three players to share the second spot on the leaderboard.
Dufner, however, was among the most watched players on the course because of his recent wins on the PGA Tour.
He recorded a win in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at the end of April and tied for the 68th position in the Players Championship, thereafter.
Following the players, he appeared in the HP Byron Nelson Championship and outshined his opponents to take the second victory of his career in just a three-week stretch.
He is currently holding the top position in the FedEx Cup standings and likely to qualify for the Ryder Cup this year, if he continues to play a good golf till the PGA Championship this year.
