Harris English retracts from his earlier comments about the PGA Tour players
Harris English, the recent amateur winner of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational, clarified his remarks made the previous day, where he and his LSU compatriot John Peterson claimed that they can easily take over the Top 20 to 30 players on the
PGA Tour. English was talking at the Morning Drive on Tuesday where he retracted, or better, re-phrased his earlier comments.
“We college guys still have a lot of way to go to get to that level. We played well this week but we didn’t really have anything to lose. It’s different to play money week in and week out,” he said, before paying his gratitude to the senior players on the
tour, “The older guys were great to us this week.”
Whether he seriously believes in what he said, his previous comments will have a long lasting impact on his relationships ahead with his senior players. The sport has lately been lashed out with a bulk of arrogance coming from the 22-year-old Irishman Rory
McIlroy after his success at the US Open, where he claimed that slight pinch of arrogance is necessary for top ranked player in every sport.
Young McIlroy might have crossed the thin line between arrogance and self-confidence but whatever has been the case, it’s an irrefutable fact that senior players always deserve to be respected in their own domains.
John Peterson, who started off the rant the previous day, was not available for the comments where had said,
“The top guys in college, the top 20 or 30 guys, can beat the top 20, 30 guys on the PGA Tour. Maybe with the exception of two or three guys who are constantly up there, like a Matt Kuchar or Luke Donald.”
English became the third ever amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour last week where he took the better of his compatriot Bulldog Peterson and the more established Kyle Reifers, by one shot. Peterson and English were locked in a fierce battle till the last
hole and the duo have come out to be a potent threat to the leading tour players on the Nationwide Tour.
