Harris English turns professional and will debut at Nationwide Tour
American amateur player Harris English has now decided to turn professional at the conclusion of the biennial Walker Cup and will now be part of the field at the Nationwide Tour circuit where he has already won a title in his amateur career this year.
The 22-year-old Thomasville Georgia native was able to power into the field of the coveted Walker Cup after his stellar performance throughout the season. He lost two of his rounds and also won two of them but was not able to guide the American team to victory.
Great Britain and Ireland snatched the elusive title with an overwhelming victory.
“My goal is to make the Nationwide Tour Championship, which would mean I’ll have a chance to earn my PGA Tour card, which is the ultimate goal,” English said in Chattanooga, Tennessee, “In the near future, I would love to have the kind of immediate impact
players such as Keegan Bradley and my former Georgia teammate Chris Kirk have had on the PGA Tour this year.”
English has come out to be one of the promising players on the American circuit who have done well and is likely to continue with his splendid form for a long time to come. A student at the University of Georgia, English played two Nationwide Tour events
this year, the Stadion Classic at UGA and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational.
The American went over to win the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational taking over the more established Kyle Reifers and his amateur compatriot John Peterson by one shot. English was also only the third amateur who went over to win the Nationwide
Tour title after Daniel Summerhays in 2007 and Russell Henley in 2011.
English will make his debut at the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Golf Classic Sept. 22-25 in San Jacinto, California and will later play three more events on the tour including the WNB Golf Classic, Children’s Hospital Classic and the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville
Open at TPC Sawgrass.
The young amateur player and his compatriot Peterson who finished runner-up at the Nationwide Children’s hospital Invitational, came under strict criticism of the golf critics when they lashed out at the existing PGA Tour players saying that they can play
better than most of them.
The statement issued out by both the juveniles, triggered a huge uproar and many senior players on the tour lamented the reckless remarks made by the duo. English quickly backed away from his earlier comments and said that his statement was read out of context.
English, like many of the young amateur-turned-professional players, will be hoping to break into the PGA Tour in order to be a part of the lucrative sponsorship deals with the sports equipment manufacturing giants and be carefree about their monetary expenses
for the moment.
Top 25 on the Nationwide Tour money list, at the end of the season, are usually extended an approval o play on the PGA Tour for the next year.
