Harris Hawk aspet?

We had a pest controller in work tody who way flying a harris hawk. completely fell in love with it what are these like as pets i live in britain could i keep it outside on a lead ? how much training involved?

No they're not like pets. They are birds of prey which are used for hunting and pest control and they need a lot of training as well as yourself needing training to handle them. Along with a large avery and a strong stomach as you need to feed them chicks and other small birds.

I suggest you learn all about care of birds of prey before going off and buying one.

Most countries have laws against keeping wild birds as pets.  Falconers can keep them..but keeping a bird to practice falconry and keeping one as a pet are two entirely different things.  You have to complete an apprenticeship with an already licensed falconer before you can even apply for a bird of your own. Keeping a hawk is not something to take lightly..it takes LOTS of time, training, commitment, and responsibility. You should not get one just because you think it's cute or cool to own a hawk.  Do lots or research before you decide to get such a bird.

There is no law in the UK about who can and cannot own pirds of prey.  More is the pity, I'm sure!

You don't need a license as long as the bird has been purchased from a breeder (which it would have to be as Harris Hawks are not a British Species)

they are a beautiful bird but I would suggest that they are not a pet!  The Hawks you see the falconer work with are WORKING ANIMALS.  A hawk as a pet would be bored to tears.

If you do decide to go down this line, PLEASE get some training and do MUCH more research before you do!!
