Harrison Barnes stars as North Carolina Tar Heels edge past Wisconsin Badgers 60-57: NCAA Recap
Harrison Barnes chipped in with a game-high 20 points; including 10 in the close second half, as North Carolina Tar Heels defeated Wisconsin Badgers 60-57 on November 30, 2011 at the Dean E. Smith Center, Chapel Hill. With this
victory, North Carolina improved to 6-1 while the Badger saw their six-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-1.
Barnes shot 6 for 12 from the field and 6 for 7 from free throw line as Tar Heels successfully recovered from their 90-80 UNLV Rebels 90-80 in the previous game.
“It felt like that might be the game right there,” Barnes said. “They had the momentum and we knew we had to get it going. So I was just trying to get some points on the board.”
Tyler Zeller played a brilliant game with 12 points on a perfect 6 for 6 shooting from free throw line and also clutched seven rebounds. Forward John Henson pulled down a game best 17 rebounds, racked up eight points and blocked
five shots in the victory.
Carolina's bench was not impressive at all, as they combined for just seven points – including five of them by sophomore Reggie Bullock.
Jordan Taylor led Wisconsin with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists in impressive 39 minutes of action. Jared Berggren added 14 points, five rebounds and three steals while Ryan Evans delivered 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds
and blocked three shots.
The Carolina Tar Heels outshot the Badgers in all categories, hitting 19 for 45 (42.2 percent) from the field, 3 for 9 (33.3 percent) from three-point range and 19 for 24 (79.2 percent) from the line. Wisconsin, meanwhile, ended
on just 35.9 percent (23 for 64) from the floor and 50 percent (3 for 6) from the charity stripe. North Carolina out-rebounded the Badgers 39-26.
The Tar Heels stormed onto the court and held a 19-10 lead with 11:04 to go in the first half. Wisconsin fought back though and made it a one-point contest, 25-24, at halftime.
The Badgers continued their momentum in the second half and sprinted out to a 38-34 lead with 10:58 to go in the game. The Carolina Tar Heels, however, gathered their rhythm and reeled off an 8-0 run for a 42-38 lead.
Frank Kaminsky nailed a shot from downtown to cut the margin to one but Carolina punctuated seven unanswered points to put the game out of the reach of their opponents.
The Badgers would not get any closer than three points for the rest of the game.
